Lesson 8 - 〜かのようだ/かのように
What does かの add to ようだ?
〜ようだ is a direct comparison: "A is like B."
〜かのようだ emphasizes that it's not really true, but it looks/feels that way.
The か in かの is the same か that expresses doubt or uncertainty — like in 「何だかおかしい」(something seems off). It creates a stronger sense of "this isn't reality, but it sure looks like it."
Compare:
まるで台風が通り過ぎたようだ。
→ It's like a typhoon came through.
まるで台風が通り過ぎたかのようだ。
→ It's as if a typhoon came through. (but it didn't)
Both sentences compare the situation to a typhoon, but かのようだ pushes the gap between what's real and what it looks like.
Note: 〜ようだ can also be used to present someone as an example ("I want to be like that person"), but 〜かのようだ cannot — because かのようだ always implies "it's not actually true."
