How to install a Japanese Keyboard
1. Windows Computers:
- Go to Settings > Time and Language > Region and Language.
- Choose Add a Language and select 日本語 Japanese > Next.
- Unselect “Set as my Windows display language and Speech”, select Handwriting > Install.
- To switch to Japanese, click the language icon next to the time. Select Japanese Microsoft IME. A letter “A” will appear in your bottom panel bar. Click it, and it will change to “あ”. Now, you can type in Japanese!
2. Mac Computers:
- Open System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources.
- Click +, select Japanese, and click Add.
- A flag will appear next to the date and time at the top of your Mac. Click on it and select Hiragana. This is your main input mode for learning Japanese. You’re all set!
3. iPhones and iPads:
- Navigate to Settings > General > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard.
- Select Japanese - Romaji (avoid selecting Kana) > Done.
- To switch to Japanese, click on the little globe on the bottom left corner of your keyboard. Happy typing!
4. Android Phones:
- Install the Google Japanese Input app from the [Google Play Store]
- Open the app and follow the instructions to enable the keyboard in Settings > Select Input Method.
- Choose Keyboard Layout > QWERTY (avoid 12 keys or Godan).
- To revert to your regular keyboard, use the keyboard icon on the navigation bar when the keyboard is open.
