コーヒーが嫌いですが、お茶が大好きです→?

[Correction Challenge]

コーヒーが嫌いですが、お茶が好きですね。

コーヒーがきらいですが、おちゃがすきですね。

Can you find the mistake?

[Answer]

コーヒー嫌いですが、お茶好きですね。

→コーヒー嫌いですが、お茶好きですね。

I don't like coffee, but I love tea.

Why?

Comparing A and B (Contrast)

= A…、B…。

Most textbooks teach you to use "が" with "好き / 嫌い" (e.g., お茶が好きです). That is completely correct.

However, when you are contrasting two things (コーヒー vs お茶), the particle changes to "は".

コーヒー嫌いですが、お茶好きです。

Examples:

父(ちち)こわいが、母(はは)やさしい。

My father is scary, but my mother is kind.

=父 vs 母

やきゅう好(す)きです。でも、サッカー好(す)きじゃありません。

I like baseball. But I don't like soccer.

=やきゅう vs サッカー

英語(えいご)話(はな)せますが、フランス語(ご)ちょっと・・・。

I speak English, but not French....

=英語 vs フランス語

💡 Great job practicing your listening today!

As you saw in the video, memorizing textbook grammar is not enough. When you make your own sentences, unnatural habits (like using が instead of は) will happen.

And you cannot fix what you cannot see.

That is exactly why you need an experienced teacher to check your Japanese. Inside the JLPT All-in-One Course, I personally check your homework every single day and give you direct feedback to fix these exact mistakes.

⚠️ ENROLLMENT CLOSES SOON! ⚠️

We are only accepting new students until April 10th at 23:59 (Japan Time). With just 3 months left until the July JLPT, this is the perfect time to start.

Stop guessing if your Japanese is natural. Let’s make sure you are 100% ready for the exam!
