Used when you "want to be heard more" or "want to explain why".

〜から：When simply explaining why.

There are times when it is okay to use either, and times when it is more natural to use "〜んです".

I often use "〜んです" when I want the other person to understand my feelings.

e.g.

A:おそかったですね

B:バスが来なかったんです。（Please understand my feelings...）

B:バスが来なかったからです。（I don't have any feelings.）

何をしているんですか。(I want to know more about what you are doing so explain it.)

何をしていますか。(A simple question, no ulterior motive.)
